Our Library is embarking on an $8.6 million construction project to expand and repurpose our existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium, state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an instruction lab and more.

 

The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking a positive, dependable, customer service-oriented individual to join our staff as a part-time Information Assistant. As part of the Information Services Department and reporting to the Head of Information Services, the individual in this role is responsible for providing reference service and instruction to the South Brunswick community. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively instruct patrons how to use library resources, assist with finding books and placing holds, troubleshoot basic computer issues, and plan and execute library programs. Assisting with maintaining the collection, such as recording keeping and displays, are also part of the primary job responsibilities.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a four year college
  • Ability to speak, write and communicate in English effectively
  • Ability to identify, customize and present innovative programs
  • Comfortable working with technology and a diverse population
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required
  •  

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with customer service or public libraries
  • Knowledge of SIRSI/Workflows
  • Experience with instruction planning and promotion
  • Fluency in another language other than English

Salary:

Anticipated 2022 hourly starting rate is $19.50. This is a union position.

CDL Driver for Mobile Library

Flexible hours

The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking a driver/clerk to operate its newer Mobile Branch. This M2 Freightliner truck is customized to be a “Library on Wheels” to serve the community of South Brunswick. Applicants must have a Class B CDL with airbrake endorsement and a clean driving record. Our ideal candidate will also enjoy engaging with the community and assisting adults and children who wish to borrow library material. Hours are flexible.

The driver is also responsible for daily pre-trip inspections, reporting any mechanical or safety issues, and refueling vehicle. Basic computer skills are required and the Library will train the driver/clerk on how to perform basic library duties. A positive customer service attitude and the willingness to learn new skills are key.

Must have the ability to do the following:

    • Safely operate the vehicle.
    • Lift, push or pull up to 45 lbs. to perform the physical tasks of book transport and delivery.
    • Maintain an effective working relationship with all employees and patrons.
    • Troubleshoot customer problems and negotiate solutions whenever possible without supervisor input.
    • Work flexible hours, including possibly a weekend day rotation.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; some college preferred; must be physically and mentally capable of performing job tasks; must be and remain drug and other substance free (continuing random screenings are performed); must successfully pass a six‐month probation period; Customer service experience preferred.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

Salary:

Anticipated 2022 hourly starting rate is $21. This is a union position.

Emerging Technologies and Instructional Librarian

Full Time, 35 hours p/week

The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking a full-time Emerging Technologies and Instructional Librarian, committed to bringing our library to the cutting edge of technology and providing digital literacy instruction to the public and the staff.  The Emerging Technologies Librarian should possess the knowledge and enthusiasm to work with new technology as it relates to improving the overall customer experience.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement new digital services and tools the library should make available to the public and staff.
  • Remain current on library trends and emerging technologies that would assist the user experience and refresh/revise for improvement and continued relevance.
  • Provide technology and device training for patrons and staff and develop training materials, tutorials, and instructional classes.
  • Evaluate database subscriptions by tracking usage and researching new products..
  • Take a leading role in planning and implement the upcoming Tech/Create Lab in collaboration with other SBPL librarians.
  • Collection development and evaluation duties as assigned.
  • As part of the Information Services team, provide customer focused reference, reader’s advisory and general assistance to customers at the public desk.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot technology equipment used by the public.
  • Assist in creating and updating the Library’s technology plan and be part of the in-house technology team.
  • Add information to Library website (WordPress) and input events on online calendar.
  • Represent the Library at community events.

Requirements:

  • Accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences and possess or be able to obtain a New Jersey Professional Library certificate.
  • Experience working in a public library setting.
  • Experience developing training materials and delivering instruction strongly preferred.
  • Strong computer and digital literacy skills and proficiency using new technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills—ability to work and interact effectively with others in a positive manner, as well as work well under pressure with courtesy and tact.
  • Proactive and quick learner with a strong interest in learning and teaching new technologies.
  • Knowledge of SIRSI/DYNIX a plus.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

Salary:

Anticipated salary for 2022 is $60,445. SBPL provides a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and prescription benefits with employee contributions rolled back to Year 2 levels (50% reduction). 22 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 personal days per year plus paid holidays.
