Borrowing

BORROWING

Cardholders in good standing may borrow books, periodicals, DVDs, videos, music CDs, CD-ROMs, audiobooks, and games for Wii, PlayStation, and Xbox from SBPL.  Audiobooks and e-books also may be downloaded via our web site. Most borrowing is free of charge.

RENEWALS

Most items may be renewed two times.  An item may be renewed online, by phone, or in-person.  Exceptions include: all DVDs, videos, CD-ROMs, games, and reserved items; these items may not be renewed.

RETURNS

All items may be returned at anytime to the outside bookdrop at the Library building located on Kingston Lane.  Bookdrops other than those at the Library building are reserved for print materials only, such as books and magazines. All Bookmobile items may be returned to the Bookmobile as well as the Library. Bookmobile print items may also be returned to the various bookdrops in town.

ACCESSING YOUR ACCOUNT

It is a good idea to know how to access your own Library account to view your checked out items, due dates, renewals, and holds at your convenience.  To do so, you will need to use the 14-digit number found on your library card and your Personal Identification Number (PIN).  If you do not remember your PIN, call the Checkout Desk at 732-329-4000, ext. 7290.  You can also request the item online through Ask A Librarian

The following options are available to acquire a book that the South Brunswick Public Library does not own:

HOLDS

A Hold (also known as a Reserve) can be placed on most items listed in the LMxAC Catalog that are checked out or otherwise unavailable from SBPL.

Holds may be placed through the online catalog,  at the Information Desk or by phone at 732-329-4000, ext. 7286.    A library card is required to place a hold.   Certain restrictions apply.

You will be notified by e-mail or telephone when your reserved item is available.  There is a 25 cent service fee at pick-up for each reserved item.

RECIPROCAL AND OPEN BORROWING

Your Library card can be used at the nearly 30 member libraries in LMxAC (Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium).  The Library also has reciprocal agreements with Franklin Township and  M.U.R.A.L. (Middlesex Union Reciprocal Associated Libraries). A list is available at the Checkout Desk.

A card holder may also want to use the larger lending service Open Borrowing.  If you want to participate, you must obtain a green authorization sticker for your library card from the Checkout Desk.  There is no fee to join this program; it is free.

Restrictions do apply so please contact the library you wish to visit beforehand.

SmartPay – Pay for fines or lost items using a credit card

This service is available online only via a patron’s home computer or a Library’s public access computer.  It will not be available from the Library’s Checkout Desk; Library staff cannot take credit card payments.

This service is being offered by the Libraries of Middlesex County (LMxAC) through all of its member libraries.   No credit card data will be stored.
