American History Resources at SBPL
The library has many resources covering American history. Many of the resources are grouped together in one section. 973 is the Dewey Decimal number for general works on American history, however, information about economic and labor history, women's history, statistics, presidential elections, the Constitution, and wars fought overseas are spread throughout the library. In addition, the library has a number of periodicals in their original form, on microfilm, and on microfiche which date from the 1960's to the 1980's. Subject Headings and Dewey Numbers

Every item in the library has an entry in the computer catalog (OPAC), part of these entries are standardized subject headings. These subject headings can be used in a keyword search. Dewey Decimal numbers are assigned mostly on the basis of subject. Books with same (or similar) Dewey Decimal numbers will cover the same subjects; the Dewey numbers are the same for reference books and circulating books (reference books have an 'R' before the number). The following table gives subjects and Dewey Decimal numbers for selected topics in American history.
