Summer Reading

Escape the Ordinary: Celebrate Our Heroes

Adults Events

This summer, we are going to focus on historical, contemporary, local and global Heroes.

We are encouraging adults to read biographies about the people they consider to be heroes or to discover heroes that you did not know before.  Pick up a reading list and entry forms at the Information Desk starting on June 13 when we will have a kick-off gathering in the Food For Thought Café.

We are going to have a “Speed Booktalk Party” (like speed dating) where you will have a chance to share something about one of the biographies or books you have read and hear reviews from the other attendees about the book they have read.  It should be a fun party!  See for more information on what a booktalk is and how to give one.

The Fourth Annual Collaborative Community Mural this year will feature portraits of Heroes.  Each artist can submit a portrait of someone (or something) that answers the question: “Who or What is My Hero?”  A short artist statement explaining your choice of hero will be required with each submission.  Pick up instructions for mural submissions at the Information Desk.

Again this year, we are asking you to fill out a Book Review Entry Form for each book you read but we have a twist this year.  To thank our Military Heroes; we are asking every reader to bring something that can be added to a care package to be sent to active military personnel – one item for every book you read.  This is not a requirement, but we are hoping to be able to tell our military heroes that we are thinking about them serving our country by sending them some goodies from home.  There will be lists of items that are accepted in care packages and collection bins in the library.  If you don’t want to donate an item, we will be also taking up a collection to cover the shipping costs.

We will be working with Operation Shoebox New Jersey, an all-volunteer, non-profit, grass roots organization based in Hillsborough, New Jersey.  Operation ShoeboxNJ has shipped more than73,000 total packagesto U.S. military personnel serving in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and other posts in the Middle East since they were founded in 2005.

We will also have a Wall of Heroes posted in the library all summer where you can post a photo and the name of someone you know who is currently serving in the armed forces or who is a hero in your eyes for any other reason.  There will be a form to complete with information that will be posted with the photo.

There will be fun and informative themed programs throughout the summer – check the calendar to see what is happening and when.

At the end of the summer, on August 15, there will be our Adult Summer Reading party with gift baskets and prizes to be raffled off to anyone who submits an entry form.
